# Register closes

> Review every register opening and close at the store: who had it, how much they declared, and how much was short or over.

When cash is missing at the end of the day, the first questions are always the same: which register, who had it, and how much. In the POS the close is blind: the cashier counts without seeing the expected amount and never knows whether it balanced. The difference shows up here, in the backoffice, for whoever has to review it.

For closing in the POS, see [Close the register](/en/manuals/pos/register-close).

<Note>
  **The minimum you need to know**

  * Each row is a **register session**: from the moment the cashier opens it until it is closed.
  * The **difference** is the declared amount minus the expected amount. Negative is a shortage; positive, an overage.
  * **System cash** is the initial fund + cash sales − withdrawals, using the cash sales recorded in Fire.
</Note>

## Prerequisites

* Access to the Fire backoffice at **[app.fire.rest](https://app.fire.rest)**, with permissions for the store.
* **Channel - POS** and the store selected in the header.

## 1. Open Register closes

In the side menu, open **Fire POS → Register closes**. The list shows the store's register sessions, from newest to oldest.

</Frame>

In the top right you can filter by:

* **Period**: **Today**, **Last 7 days**, **Last 30 days** or **All**.
* **Status**: **Open**, **Closed** or **Forced close**.
* **Only with discrepancy**: hides the registers that balanced.

The **Difference** column shows red when cash is short, orange when there is extra, and green when it balanced. Open registers don't have a difference yet.

## 2. Open a register's detail

Tap a row to see the detail:

* **Opened** and **Closed**, with date and time.
* **Initial fund**, **Cash sales**, **Card sales**, **Total sales** and **Orders**.
* **Withdrawals**.
* **System cash**: initial fund + cash sales − withdrawals.
* **Declared**: what the cashier counted.
* **Difference**, labeled **Shortage**, **Overage** or **OK**.

</Frame>

On a closed register, system cash and cash sales stay at the values it was closed with: they don't change if an order is canceled later.

<Tip>
  If you only wanted to know how much was short or over in a register, you're done.

## Forced closes

A register shows **Forced close** when the cashier didn't close it from the POS. There are two cases, and the detail shows the **Forced close reason**:

* **It was closed from the backoffice** with **Close register manually**: it has a declared amount and a difference, like a normal close.
* **The terminal was revoked or deleted** while the register was open: it has no declared amount or difference, because nobody counted the cash.

To close a register from the backoffice, see [Terminal administration](/en/manuals/pos/terminal-admin#close-register-manually).

## Mistakes that cost money

<Warning>
  **Reading Total sales as cash.** **Total sales** adds up cash and card. The money that should be in the drawer is **System cash**.
</Warning>

<Warning>
  **Leaving a register open overnight.** The cashier can't open another register while that one is still open, and sales from different days end up in the same session. Close it manually with the count.
</Warning>
